Mr Brown’s thoughts for the day

Friday 20 January 2012
The new year seems a distant memory with signs of spring appearing everywhere with snowdrops and crocuses in flower and daffodils seemingly ready to burst forth.  For the Chinese the new year starts on Monday (23 January) and this is one of the earliest possible dates for the Chinese to celebrate the new year.  This year is the year of the dragon and the dragon has a very special place.  Dragons are born leaders and masters of ceremonies.  The dragon is also the only mythical creature in the 12 Chinese zodiac symbols.  I am sure there will be plenty of cause for celebration in the forthcoming days and weeks.  A happy new year (again!!!).

Citius, Altius, Fortius!!!  I don't often start the year with Latin but these three words should underpin everything we do this year.  The three words translated are Faster, Higher, Stronger and are the Olympic Motto. In an Olympic year where London is hosting the games this motto seems particularly pertinent.  The beginning of a new year provides the opportunity to reflect on the past and to set newer and higher goals and targets for the forthcoming year.  As individuals we should all be challenging ourselves to improve and to have the expectation that we can still improve and as teams and groups we should all be working together with high aspirations of what can be achieved.  So ..... a happy new year to you all and let us all make it a year where we go  ....Citius, Altius, Fortius!!!  With all best wishes for 2012.

The message of Christmas is a very simple one which is interpreted through presentations, nativities, carol concerts, plays and Christmas cards right across the globe. As I look at the numerous Christmas cards which I have received the message of Christmas is very clear. “Peace on Earth, good will toward all people." I wish you a happy, relaxed and peaceful Christmas and New Year.

The season of advent began last Sunday with the lighting of the first candle on the advent wreath in churches up and down the country to celebrate the first Sunday in advent.  Of course many of us will have opened the first "window or door" in our own advent calendars at home..... I also suspect (but hope not) that many may have opened more doors in order to eat what they find inside.  The season of advent is a season of preparation and provides an opportunity for reflection.  In my advent calendar the first picture is a set of bells.  The bells provide a poignant symbol to start the season, which culminates in the celebration which is Christmas.  I hope that your advent is filled with times of reflection, peace and celebration.

How private is your life?  This is an interesting question and one which will be investigated fully in the coming days and weeks during the Leveson Inquiry in to phone hacking by major news organisations and the repercussions of their behaviour and their "invasion of privacy."  We often freely give out details to firms, shops, businesses and organisations but do we ever stop to think about how that information can be passed to another person or organisation.  We also know that a great deal of information about public figures and  the public at large can be found easily through "google".  Most people will have used "google" to find out about someone ..... and some people may have even "googled" themselves to see what it says (believe it or not there is a verb - to google!!!).  The hope in the future is that the Inquiry will go someway to restoring privacy to the lives of both public figures and,  perhaps most importantly, the public at large.  These issues cannot be "swept" under the carpet.

At Blackfen we aim to ensure that our young people are truly global citizens and one of our most exciting projects this year is the development of a link with a partner school in India.  The school is called Hari Shree Vidyalayam and it is located in the city of Chennai.  On Saturday Mr Neil (Assistant Head Teacher) and Mr Pattisson (Faculty Leader - Power Up!) will be joining one of our Governors - Mr Fitz-Gerald - for a week long visit to the school and to Chennai.  Over the last 2 terms students at Blackfen have been working on projects to support this work including a charter of children's rights.  During the visit there will be an exchange of letters from our students and a presentation of the work which both schools have been involved in.  The key learning intention is for our students to gain an understanding of what life is like in Chennai and for the students at Hari Shree Vidyalayam to gain an understanding of what life is like as a young person in south east London.  We look forward to hearing more about the visit.
