The learning journey
The personal journey
Every young person is different and every learning
journey is unique. The potential of every young
person is recognised. Learning is challenging,
innovative and planned to address students’
needs. Our teachers expect young people to
embrace challenges, show resilience and assess
their understanding and progress so that they are
ready for the next steps. High quality teaching and
learning is at the heart of what we do.
Every member of staff participates in an extensive
training programme to develop their professional
knowledge and skills. They are multi-skilled role
models who are continuously learning and aspire
to be outstanding. We ensure our commitment
to professional excellence impacts on students’
learning and development as a daily reality.
Our young people progress their journey through
access to a broad and balanced curriculum. This
breadth is maintained through years 10 and 11,
where there is also an element of choice, to our
successful 6th form. Students with additional
needs are supported throughout their journey
and we have a specialist resource provision for
students with a visual impairment or speech and
communication disorder. We are motivated by the
quality and range of all our students’ achievements.
In year 7, students are placed in a mixed-age
tutor group belonging to one of five communities.
Throughout a students personal journey at the
school the community tutor, the student support
officer, the raising attainment co-ordinator
and other members of the student welfare
team monitor academic progress and personal
development rigorously.
The school’s longstanding development of
students’ leadership skills endorses the work of our
teams of Student Leaders. They have wide-ranging
input into all aspects of school life. Working with
teachers to develop excellence in teaching and
learning students have been trained as digital
leaders, literacy leaders, numeracy leaders and
student learning consultants. Our elected student
council take on responsibility for continuing to
improve the school for the school community.
Our Behaviour Charter sets high standards for
behaviour, attitude to learning and respect of
oneself and others. Rewarding positive behaviour
promotes high-level achievement. Our parents
support these expectations by ensuring that
every young person adheres to the clear guidance
provided in the Charter.
All year 7 students are visited in their primary
school and spend a day with us in the summer
term to familiarise themselves with school
routines. There is also a summer school and a
family barbecue to ensure a smooth transition.
