Raising aspirations - releasing potential

First Generation Scholars' Scheme

Dear Parent

Blackfen School is always looking for ways to help fulfil our mission to raise aspirations.  Recently we have entered a partnership with The University of Sussex called the First Generation Scholars Scheme (FGSS).  This scheme is part of the government’s education policy to offer young people opportunities and access to further study after leaving school or college.  The scheme provides opportunities for:

  • subject days at the university,
  • working with current university students,
  • advice and guidance on future careers,
  • mentoring,
  • general events for both students and their families.

We have been asked to identify students in Years 9 and Year 12 that are eligible to participate in this scheme. The criteria are very specific as the scheme is aimed at those that are under-represented in higher education.  The application form below asks questions that may seem unrelated to your child’s future and it is not our wish to cause offence in trying to identify whether your daughter/son can benefit from this scheme.   Please be aware that although some of the questions may seem very personal, they are asked solely as a way to reach students that the funding for this particular scheme requires.

I would be grateful if you would please take the time to fill out the forms below and return them either electronically or by paper for my attention by Friday 13th December.

If your daughter/son is not eligible for membership of the FGSS, please be assured that this is just one of many opportunities offered to our students through our links with universities and employers and that the school is always taking advantage of events to develop our young people's learning, knowledge and aspiration.

If your son/daughter is eligible for the scheme, I will write to you again to let you know. In the meantime, if you would like more information please do contact me or you can also visit the web page

Yours faithfully
